Graham asks…

My facial expression has changed and become angry!?

This problem might sound very strange, but it’s a major problem fro me. Over the last two years, I have been under so much pressure that my facial expression has changed. I once walked around happy, but now my facial expression is angry and tense. Wherever I go, people think I’m standoffish, but that isn’t true at all. I’ve literally felt my facial muscles seem “heavy” and I walk around with a frown all the time. People always look at me and the response is not good. If I go to a party, no one talks to me because I look angry and mean. I know this problem might seem bizarre, but it’s impacting my life in bad ways, and I need help!!!!
No, this is NOT a joke! Yawn.

steve answers:

Make yourself smile more. I always like to make them wonder.

Mark asks…

which muscle is involved in mastication but is classed as a muscle of facial expression?

steve answers:

Cheeky question.

Wayne asks…

As a model, how do you practice facial expressions?

As a model, if not more or just important, facial expressions will come up & you have to learn to master this craft. If you don’t have a good face, the body & costume are just there. So can anyone please give me some creative tips on practicing facial expressions besides just looking in the mirror.. facial muscles exercises..anything..

steve answers:

It’s about working with a good photographer who can look at your face and see which angle to shoot from, if you should tilt your head up or down a bit, if you should smile with your lips closed or open, etc.

If you don’t want to pay for a professional photo shoot, have a friend take hundreds of pictures of you from all angles, and using all different expressions, then go through each one to see which angles and expressions look best

Ken asks…

i was just wondering if making wierd facial expressions can change your exterior appearance?

I was pushing my cheeks from side to side with my facial muscles and it started to hurt around the cheek area. Just wondering if that can change the way you will look or if it does any real damage to your face. Keep in mind I did this all day long..?

steve answers:

No, it will not make any permanent changes. :)

Questions And Answers On Black And White Images Of People

Susan asks…

Why are white people offended when I say I love being Black?

Our t-shirts say I love being Black ( http://www.ilovebeingblack.com ). Most black people love them. Some white people seem to think these shirts cause division between whites and blacks. Silly me, I thought it was slavery or racism or the embedded myth of white supremacy or how the people at the top want everyone else to focus on small entanglements like this.
Let me be clear, these shirts are created by black people, for black people. These shirts are meant to express the love for your blackness because it has been diminished in so many of us due to: negative images in the media, the destruction of the black family structure, violence in our communities, or the many traps laid out for us.
Why do these same white people see nothing wrong with the shirts that say ‘everyone loves a jewish girl’ or ‘blondes just do it better’ or everyone loves an irish girl’ or ‘kiss me i’m italian’??

I’d like for ALL ethnicities to respond, let me know if you find something negative about the shirts..
Thanks for the responses. I think the reigning sentiment is that white people don’t like not being able to wear what appears to be a reciprocal message on a shirt. This seems valid, but let’s explore it a bit more.
Statements like white power, i love being white, or white people are the best are associated with terrible historic times in this country. Slavery: when black people were dehumanized and murdered in the millions.
Eugenics movement: when white people used scientific racism to try and prove that blacks were inferior.
When black people were made 3/5 human by law, for voting purposes.
Out of all this negativity came the aforementioned sayings.

Sayings like black power, black pride, or black women are the best, were created as a response to white people oppressing black people. This response was not meant to remove whites from a pedastool, but to uplift our people.

In a perfect world the statements would be identical, but I do think the words have different meanings behind them

steve answers:

Because they think it would be racist if they do it. Like they Say if they had a station call WET Blacks would think it racist. Or if Blacks say “Black Power” and whites say “White Power” It would be racist. They only think that if they did those things.

Some will find some of those things racist because they would have a corrupted motive for it. Like asking why can blacks use the N word but whites did, it would be racist? Why would whites want to use the N word?? Yet they don’t realize that Whites invented that word solely to be racist and hateful, that’s why they would be seen as racist for that. Blacks never use it as racist that’s why it not racist.

WET would also question their motive, they make a station like this it would fail. Whites are well represented on TV, so why? Would they want to see the shows on BET all day long on every other station. No, truth is their happy for Bet because if Bet programing was on other stations they would complain, Hell they complain already and don’t even watch it.

White power would be racist because again it means oppression, KKK, and hate and racist wihich was white supremacy. White power in every way has everything associated which racism. Yet Black power was about overcoming, independence, and power against hate and racism. Big difference.

I love to be white may also have something to do with their motive. Not saying it’s wrong but when whites have the history they do, it could be consider racist to blacks. Because everything whites say if they did it, it would be racist mostly because that what racist whites use to be racist. You also don’t have to go to the 1800′s to find racism but back 40 years ago or even today.

Wayne asks…

photo-shop help , for working with black and white images

I have a black and white street scene of people and buildings which no longer exist, my question is, is it possible to use some kind of measurement on the shades of grey to calculate the original colours and render the areas accordingly?? Thanks

steve answers:

Wow! What an interesting idea. That would be a very creative process.

But, no … Sorry. I don’t think there’s any way to do that.

I’m anxious to see what other answers you get, and if anyone knows a way.

Good luck!

Kylee asks…

Why African’s have more repect for white people, than they do black people in america?

I have witness over the years, some Africans making fun of black people in schools and in plataces I’ve worked! The insults varies from to food that we (meaning Black Americans) eat, the clothes we wear, the music we listen to and what we watch on TV. I’ve heard more that once an statement from Africans that, ” Black America have no culture because, the people here have no morals and no respect for their elder’s and God.” ((((What?)))

I don’t know how they are being educated on this information but, it seem like the image of Black Americans have been tainted with negative views. The same way Americans were given views of African as always starving and naked. ( Which is not ture, in some areas.)

The Africans I’ve been around, act and talked as if they had higher morals and respect that black people here in America. I don’t see how that it possible! We are all the same race but, different shades of brown!

Another thing that I just don’t understand, why some Africans come to America, with the agenda to pay a white woman/man to marry them so they can stay in the US? (I know of this because I two white friends from high school who did this.) Is that part of the African culture? Can someone help me out here? I just don’t understand what is the deal. I feel like this, if you are going to come here and not take the time to learn about positive things about America and disrespect the Black people who were in America before you, you can stay where you came from. We already get enough of that crap from bigots!!! I was brought to respect all people of all clutures and races, but, the minute you disrespect me, your done.

steve answers:

Possibly because the Africans I know came here, got degrees, opened businesses without help from anyone. By and large a lot of black Americans drop out of school dress, act and speak in a disrespectful manner and blame the fictional boogieman of racism for them not getting ahead in life. Clearly it is not skin color holding them back but you just can’t make people have a work ethic, speak properly, or want to go to school. I guarantee anyone in this country regardless of race that works hard, gets an education, sets goals for themselves can do anything anyone else can,

Paul asks…

Why Do Only White People Discuss Race on TV?

Raina Kelley

I’m sorry, but if I have to use Senator Reid’s private remarks describing Obama as “light-skinned” and praising his lack of a “Negro dialect” as a teachable moment for America, then this country is in an even greater state of denial (when it comes to race relations) than I even thought possible. Did Reid choose his words carelessly? Maybe, but then again “Negro” is a choice available to all Americans on the 2010 Census. But there is an education to get from this tempest in a teapot─in fact, it’s a beautiful opportunity to show, once again, how so many of these moments could have educational value if the media praised not just racial neutrality but equal opportunity.

Because while I got a real kick out of Liz Cheney attempting to explain why Reid was a foaming racist on George Stephanopoulos’s This Week and George Will’s use of the word “scintilla” to defend Reid, I didn’t so much enjoy watching a table of all white people discussing a topic (racist or not?) that would have been very much enlivened by the presence of a single person studied in the topic such as Peter Beinert, a senior political writer over at the Daily Beast, or Ta-Nehisi Coates over at The Atlantic. The person doesn’t have to be black (Beinert isn’t) but I’ve found, in my own journalism career, that if you want to talk about black issues, it’s good to ask an African-American or two. In a column I wrote about the media and Obama, I wrote this on the state of our media and race issues:

This is what can be so unbelievably frustrating to African-Americans. We get apologies for things no reasonable person would be offended by, nonapology apologies when we are offended. (Really? Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grouse didn’t know black people were offended by watermelon jokes?) Meanwhile, nobody’s having the kinds of discussions African-Americans would like to have─like whether increased diversity in the newsroom can prevent the negative racial stereotyping we saw during Hurricane Katrina, when black people were reported as “looting” while white people were said to be “foraging.” Why can’t we debate why, according to The Black Image in the White Mind written by Robert Entman and Andrew Rojecki, a mugshot of a black defendant is four times more likely to appear in a local television news report than one of a white defendant? No offense to MSNBC, but stories about white supremacists who are mad because the president is black don’t contribute much to our national conversation about race other than “duh.”

Attorney General Eric Holder got into trouble when he said that “we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards … We average Americans simply do not talk enough with each other about race.” But he’s right. We spend hours debating when we can say “monkey,” but fall into awkward silence if substantive issues like affirmative action or crime rates in the inner city come up.

But, I get it. Race issues are scary. There are few souls brave (stupid?) enough to say what they think about the various races outside the privacy of their homes. It could cost you your career. Just ask Don Imus. But it just should not be so easy for the mainstream media to discuss racialized incidents without the benefit of black voices other than, of course, the obligatory benediction from the Rev. Al Sharpton. Diversity for diversity’s sake may be considered old-fashioned, but getting the story right isn’t, especially since such a diversity of voices only serve to enhance coverage of these issues for readers and viewers.
http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/thegaggle/archive/2010/01/11/why-do-only-white-people-discuss-race-on-tv.aspx

steve answers:

Harry Reid was talking, perhaps inelegantly, about why he’s wholeheartedly supporting our first black president. There is nothing whatsoever racist about his comments.

Many Republicans who have been criticized on the subject of race, however, have used racist names and rhetoric AGAINST black people, like the famous George Allen comment. And the right-wing racist comments are taken more seriously because that party is a mecca for racists nowadays.

Having said that, Americans needsto discern the difference between a RACIST comment and a RACIAL comment.

If we’re ever going to have our long-delayed conversation about race, white people are going to have to be able to participate, even on issues that black people have considered their own. I can’t count the number of conversations I had in 2008 with savvy political observers of every race, talking about the advantages of Obama being light-skinned and biracial.

Seriously, does anyone really think it’s coincidence that our first black president is a biracial man who came from Hawaii by way of Harvard?

Joseph asks…

Why are MIXED people (Black & White) called black???

It seems that mixed people (Afrian-American/Black and Caucasian/White) are always labeled either Black or Mixed and are grouped together with the Black community. They are in the middle of both groups but seem to be labeled with only one. I know this is not always the case, but in general I have found it to be.

My Mom is white and my Dad is black and native american, most people think I’m white, but as soon as they find out I’m mixed they label me as black only ???

A few mixed celebrities (All black & white):

Thank you for your help :)
No she’s not white, she is black and white. I look very similar to her and I’m mixed. I am 50% white, 30% black, and 20% native american. And I just look like I have a tan, I also have very light brown hair, and green eyes.
Rashida Jones, looks very similar to me and she is mixed. Her father is Quincy Jones…

steve answers:

The US is a so called ‘euro-centered’ society. That means that the labels are made from a white perspective. In other words; “If you are not really white, you are black” It is impossible to make an ‘objective’ label, since it is proven that races do not exist. No human being is 100% one race, it is all a continuum of genetics.

Questions And Answers On Portrait Innovations

Chris asks…

How much do individual sheets cost at Portrait Innovations?

I saw the 9.99 package special, but they don’t list prices for additional sheets on their website. Has anyone used them? Were you happy with your pictures?

steve answers:

They are truly THE BEST. I am not sure individual sheets. I think a set is like $24.95?? I usually spend $69.95 and get the cd — then you have all the shots and there are TONS. Usually they take about 80-95 of my kids. My kids r young so it helps to get a good shot.

They, like all the photo places do the hard sell, for a ton of $ — but I never feel bad, even if all I get is the $9.95 — which I have done plenty of times.

Thomas asks…

Couples Pictures at Portrait Innovations?

I made an appointment at portrait innovations for my two year anniversary with my boyfriend. We’re young (19 & 20), I just want to know if anyone has taken couples pictures at Portrait Innovations? because i feel kind of awkward knowing its mostly for kids and families.

steve answers:

It doesn’t matter, the quality is the same. It’s a portrait and that’s what they do.

Caroline asks…

How much can I expect to pay at Portrait Innovations?

Im taking my Daughter to PI for her First B-Day pics this week and want to be prepared. I planned on spending about $100.00 at the original place before I found PI. Can I get a lot of pics for $100 or less? For anyone that has went there and spent about that much what all did you get? Are Cd’s included with packages?
Thanks in Advance!

steve answers:

Yes you get lots of pics and sdome cds

Hope this helps

Nancy asks…

Anybody work for or know of anyone that works for Portrait Innovations?

Its a photography company located all over the states. How do you like it?

steve answers:

Used to. Hated it. Watch your paycheck if you decide to work for them. They like to skim here & there.

Graham asks…

Has anyone ever worked for Portrait Innovations?

I am a recent graduate in photography and graphic design. I have been researching the company but not too many details.

$30,000.00 – 37,250.00 USD /year plus Bonus? Is this really true? And is this based on salary or if you work FT hourly?

How many hours per week do you have to work?

Has your experience been a good one with the company?

Thanks for your help and feel free to post additional information that I didn’t ask. I want to know as much as possible!

steve answers:

I have and no longer do. The pay is based upon an hourly rate with most of your money being earned during Holiday seasons, meaning that you have to work 60+ hours a week with one day off, and no vacation days allowed from November through Jan. And again for the month before Easter.
The pay is 12.50 an hour to start, which if you do the math is around 26,000 a year without overtime or bonus.
About the bonus, it is not entirely impossible to get a bonus, but in the studio I worked at only 1 employee out of 8 received one. The bonus should usually be around 4,000 dollars, but taking into around that only the top 12% of employees get it, it is rather unfair to advertise that as part of your pay.
Also, benefits are not great, vacation days are hard to come by, and getting off days in a row are next to impossible.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I am not a big fan of the company, and I am slightly bitter about my experience. You would be better off searching for jobs on indeed.com which caters to the artistic jobs. I wouldn’t suggest working for this company for all the above reasons, but also because in the end you will end up hating kids, and the abusive mothers that make them cry instead of smiling. Creativity is judged upon how much you can up-sell, not how innovative your portraits are.

P.S. After I left the job, 5 other full time employees resigned that same month from my studio alone.

where can i find affordable photography props in the uk?

hi i am a new photographer just starting out on my own and wanted to find out where i can get cheap but good props from i will be taking lots of photos of children and there parents. i have found a lot of americain sites but then postage to the uk is very high. As i am only just starting out i do not have a huge budget to buy extra stuff so any help in finding cheap props i will be very grateful

steve answers:

As you know with your creative flair and imagination , you would be best getting out and about second hand shops , make your own props
buy things and adapt them for your purpose / theme only you know what you are looking for in order to produce the results that you want .
Why pay out more !!

Caroline asks…

What props can I use for a motion photography project?

I have to do an in class motion photography project. This means that I only have one person to work with. What props can I use?
some Ideas so far are:
Flushing toilet
jumping
running
Dropping things
Flicking/ spinning pens
Swinging feet

steve answers:

Theres a difference between stop motion photography, and motion…

Try this, its called panning… Take a ball, (Football size) and get your helper to roll the ball against the wall, and back, then pan with teh ball to essentially freeze it, against the moving background.

It takes some practice, but the effects are quite stunning. You can use almost anything which moves to show movement.

Questions And Answers On Facial Expressions List Muscles

Richard asks…

What the hell am I supposed to do with my life?

I don’t know what to do, with anything. I have a long list of things that I don’t like about me and my life, and I feel guilty for complaining, but I need to let it out.

First off, I feel like an empty shell. I don’t really feel connections with people, I just feel like I’m wandering through a field of strangers at school. I know a lot of people there, I’m not “active” friends with most of them, I only met them through my best friend, I try to say hi in the hallways sometimes, but I guess I just don’t get their attention or they just don’t want to talk to me. I’ve sort of given up on making new friends except people that my friend introduces me to. I’ve never had a girlfriend and I’m 16, I’ve never even kissed a girl before and that just depresses me. I feel like a loser and have nothing about me to say otherwise.

I don’t know why but people look at me for no reason I’m aware of. I’ve narrowed it down a little.
-I’m ugly, makes sense with the way people look at me.
-I have a weird expression on my face (I have trouble controlling my facial muscles for no reason)
-I look like a creep
-I’m attractive (ha ha)

I my school has an open campus, and we have a few buildings that we have to walk in-between. And I’m always staring down at my MP3 player because I can’t stand to look at the crowd of people walking in the other direction. I feel self-conscious all the time and think they will be staring at me as I pass (I might be paranoid about this but I’m 100% sure people riding in cars along the roads stare me down for no reason! I’ve seen them!)

Back to my previous problem, I’ve never had a girlfriend and it just depresses my. I’ve always been a loner, even in elementary school I just sat on the ground under the playground all recess long. My best friend says that I’m just not making friends and that’s my problem, but he also says that having a girlfriend isn’t what it’s cracked up to be (he also has at least three previously normal girlfriends that are still obsessed with him and has a few others that fight over him) so I’m not sure if he really understands how lonely I am, so I don’t think I’ll take his advice.
I can narrow down my situation for people to date:
-take out the guys
-take out the uninterested girls
-take out the ones I’m definitely not interested in

There isn’t anyone left after that. I’m not going to date someone I don’t like, and I’m not going to throw myself at ones who are dating or just don’t like me.

School is just stressful for me. REALLY stressful. For no reason. Even as a kid, I just hated going to school, my dad asked if I was being bullied or *ehem* touched by any of the teachers. There wasn’t anything like that, I just outright hate all schools. I think that’s what accounts for my uncontrolable facial expressions. I just really don’t want to be there. I was smart, they made me do some block test where I assembled some halve white/ half black blocks to match a shape on a card they held up. I got put into the advanced program (I was in elementary school). In the school system smart is synonymous with more work, and that’s just not how I work. Literally the first assignment on the first sheet of homework I got from them (front and back) was an IMPOSSIBLE to answer question. The one where you have to match the three utilities(electricity, gas, water) to three houses without overlapping any of the lines, I didn’t see that question again until eighth grade.

I’ve sort of given up hope for any relationship nobody is interested in me, I hate school, My family is crazy (I live with three women), and I’m just not happy with life and I feel depressed all the time.

I just feel like I’m a husk of a person, alive but not living, I’m not emo or goth or anything, I don’t try to fit into those groups, I feel like they only exist to get attention and that’s not what I want.

I like to think that I’m a good person, I’ve never been in a fight with anybody on account that they’ve never pissed me off enough (They would have to attack me before I even got angry enough to want to hit back) but recently I’ve been wanting to just go berserk and start throwing punches at all those pricks I see around me.

I used to play an instrument, the tuba, but I didn’t want to be at school at 6 every morning for marching band, and I forgot how to play most of the notes over the Summer Break. People say that I should get more involved, but there isn’t anything I’m motivated enough to do.

steve answers:

That’s a lot.
1.Someone is interested in you but you will never no it if you don’t LOOK UP.
2.No body’s staring at you.Where are we supposed to look.At your MP3 player?
3.We are our worst critic. No one else judges us as harshly as we do ourselves.
4.Get in a club.Any club.One that doesn’t meet at 6:00am.And finally
5.There has got to be one person out there that’s been nice to you. She’s probable shy. She’s asked you about homework or class or something to get your attention and she doesn’t know why you are ignoring her.So look around and you’ll see her.

Ken asks…

Do I have obsessive-compulsive disorder or something else?

This is a long list of what’s happening with me. But I’m not really sure what to do about it. It’s like I can’t recognize the symptoms.

First, I’ll say something about something. I was bullied until I started a High School. The whole life. Even in the kindergarten. I started the high school in September last year, when I was 15, but I couldn’t move on. I had a constant fear of being unaccepted. ‘Luckily”, there are three other unaccepted girl, so the classmates have someone else to tease. I do have social phobia, of this I’m sure. It’s been hard for me to make friends. But somehow, I’m in a group of 8 girls now. (29 girls in my class). But it’s still hard. And blah blah blah, you probably know the whole social phobia story..

Anyway, this is what bothers me:

1. Whenever I read a book, and I read one sentence, or even a word, twice, I have to take a look at the words I’ve read previously, if you know what I mean. I have to imagine I read it ALL twice somehow. And when I continue reading, I imagine I read every word twice. Don’t know if I explained it well.

2. When I do something.. I have to do it ALL in an even number, when there are the numbers! I mean, when I touch an object with one finger of left arm once, I have to do it with another finger of my right arm! Then, I have to touch it AGAIN with my “right finger”, and then again with my “left finger”. Then, I touch the object with both fingers at the same time, that all four times repeating. For balance, you know. -.- And the fingers are only an example. I do it with hands, legs.. And even when I move my eyes! If I don’t do it, I’m not calm..

3. Umm.. I have sexual fantasies. >.< I hate it! I really do. I have an imaginary boyfriend. He's the nicest person ever, and I made a whole character of him, I even thought about some flaws. I imagined the whole relationship with him, even our "first time", you know. When I'm at home alone, I talk with him and I KNOW he's not real. I make facial expressions, and I feel the emotions. It’s always the same boyfriend. I have him a few years. And I’m 16.

4. When I hold a knife (of which I’m afraid like hell), I am afraid that I will hurt myself. I never point the blade at something that can be hurt. I’m afraid that I will hurt my cat if she’s there while I hold the knife, and I have some visions of it, and then I put the knife away, and hold my hea, trying to forget. I also do it when there is anyone else (my sister, my parents..).. When I see something sharp, or even worse, when I hold something sharp, I ALWAYS think I will cut my eyes off! O.o I know it’s absurd.

5. These days, I cry a lot. I start crying for little tiny things, or for no reason. I used to be emotionally stable before.

6. I always feel something in my knuckles all over my body. I REALLY don’t know how to explain it, but it’s been there since I was a child. I always wrap my arms and legs, so I can feel something in my knuckles, like muscles or something. I do it ALWAYS. Sometimes, I clench it with ALL MY STRENGTH, all my muscles in the body, and close my eyes. I really don’t know how to explain. ://

7. I know it’s normal to be afraid of dying. I really do know. But I’m afraid.. too much? Whenever I think about it deeper, like nothing will happen after that, I start to worry so much, maybe even to panic. I often think that life has no purpose. I am also afraid of illnesses so much! I don’t think I’m a hypochondriac, but I often think I have some diseases.. >.<

There are many other things. I can list them the whole day.. But those are more important.. Please, help me! I feel like no one will answer. But I’m so afraid to seek for help >.< I'm really, really thankful if you answer! :S
Wullen Thang, please tell me what it is. =S

People have been there but wont say it. It’s not OCD, it is something else but I don’t know how to explain it. I would tell you what it is, but you wont like the answer, but is nothing you can die of. So don’t worry.
Warning: If you’re not happy in your future, or if you’re left alone, you might fall into a deep hole.

David asks…

Do I have obsessive-compulsive disorder? If not, what’s happening to me then?

And I’m 16.

steve answers:

You definitely have a moderate form of OCD. To explain OCD in simple terms:

You have an obsession, which is usually an obsessive thought. For example, let’s say some one is obsessive-compulsive about germs. All day they feel dirty, they have obsessive thoughts about feeling dirty and needing to get clean.

These obsessive thoughts create anxiety, which is worry, fear, panic, etc.

To relieve this anxiety, people to compulsions. In our example the compulsion would be something like washing your hands. The person is obsessing about germs and when he washes his hands, for a little while he feels clean. This makes him believe when he washes his hands, he feels better.

Over time this conditions yourself. This means that the obsessions become a habit, and they know that doing the compulsion will make them feel better, so they do this chain of events constantly.

The main treatment is to see a psychologist. They will work on eliminating the obsessions. Without feeling the obsessions, there is no need to do the compulsion. This is easily treatable but it’s important you act now. The longer you wait they harder it will be to undo and the worse it will get.

Wayne asks…

How serious of a case of tourettes do you think i have?

So does this sound like I have Tourette Syndrome. I get these tic like things. I don’t have a doctors diagnoses that these are tics but I’m pretty sure that that’s what it is. None of this stuff is involuntary. I get the urge to do it. I can usually hold off for about ten seconds… some of them less then that, but sooner or later I’ll have to do it.

So here’s a list of things that I think are motor tics:

I hit things with the back of my hand- not that hard, I’ve never broken anything before but sometimes it does hurt my hand. I’ve been doing this for about two weeks.

I scrunch my nose- I’ve been doing this for about a month

I make weird facial expressions (moving my eyebrows up and down, sort of moving my mouth up, pushing my forehead down)- This started recently too but I also did it when I was younger.

Throw my head back/ nodding my head- If I want to hold back I can just do this thing where I nod my head, but when I get away from people I have to throw my head back and it’s beginning to hurt my neck. I’ve been doing this for about three months.

Bending my back back- it sort of looks like I have the hiccups, I started doing this four months ago.

Clicking my teeth together- sometimes my month locks up and I can’t do it. But it’s really frustrating because I have to do it. So I’ll pretty much have to force my jaw together. And I have to keep doing it until I click them hard enough… which is usually really hard. I’ve been doing this for about a year.

Flicking/ snapping my fingers- I’ve been doing this for about two years.

Scrunching my toes- I’m not sure if this would be considered a tic because I only do it in the car when another car goes by. But I have to do it. It’s not like it’s just some bad habit or something in my head. I physically HAVE to do it. I’ve been doing this for about three years.

Flexing my arm muscles- I’ve been doing this for a few years.

Whipping the back of my hand on things- I’ve been doing this since I was six. It was the first tic I ever got and I still have it today (is that normal?). Everyone that saw me doing that just thought it was some bad habit, but I was the only one that knew that I really had no control over it. And I still doing have control over it. It’s very frustrating sometimes. For instance, if I’m watching TV late at night and I’m trying to fall asleep, I’ll get this urge to whip the back of my hand on the TV. So I’ll have to get up and do that. I’ll go back to bed and a few moments later I’ll get the urge again…

Here’s a list of what I think are my vocal tics:

Grunting- Sometimes I’ll change pitch. Like, sometimes it’s a really low grunt and sometimes it’s a high pitch one. I’ve been doing this for about a year.

High pitch squeaking- I’m not sure if this is a tic or not because it’s not as bad of an urge to do this as the other things. I can hold this in for a few hours, although evidentially I’ll have to do it. I started this a few months ago.

Saying letters of words aloud- I’m really not sure if this is a tic because it’s something I have to do in my head. When I’m reading a book or writing, I have to spell out certain letters. Most of them I’ll just do in my head, but some letters I’ll have to say aloud. And I’ll have to say them in a weird way.

I’m going to see a doctor about all this soon, but i was wondering how serious this sounds… if it even is tourettes. Does it sound like just a mild case or worse? I don’t think it’s a serious case of tourettes though. But what do you think?
Why do you think OCD?

steve answers:

I don’t think you have OCD. It sounds a lot like tourette syndrome. I’d say a moderate case. You should go to a neurologist.

I’ve had a few people tell me these things sounded like OCD. If you think that could you explain why because I have no obsessions. My mom took me to a GP about this a few days ago and my doctor recommended me to a mental health professional. But I know this isn’t mental.

These tics are really starting to bother me and I can see the affect in my grades at school. I’m getting so many in class that I can’t concentrate. My mom says that she hardly notices these tics but if I wanted her to she’d set up an appointment.

So do you think this sounds like Tourette Syndrome? Or does it sound like OCD (please explain)? And do you think I should go to the mental health professional even though its not mental? Do you think they would diagnose me there or send me to a neurologist?

Sorry for so many questions. You don’t have to answer them all. And also please no information on Tourette’s, tics, or tic disorders. I’ve done research on all of them and know clearly what they are. Thanks for reading such a long question.
